Why God’s Design for Sex and Marriage Still Matters | Father Edwin Leonard Homily

“A lot of times people ask me, ‘Father Edwin, isn’t the Church just outdated in its teaching of marriage and sexuality? Shouldn’t it just get with the times?’

And I would say no. God’s teaching—as He says today—is that the heavens and the earth will pass away before even the smallest measure of His teaching will pass away. He is God. He created you and me. He wrote the owner’s manual. He knows where we flourish...

Now, imagine if I take that fire from my fire pit, where it has proper boundaries and dimensions. Imagine if I take that fire and I put it inside on my couch. Why would I do that? That’s a great question. I—why would I do that?

It could, it could still give me light. It would still roast a marshmallow. It would still cook a hot dog. It would still boil water. It would keep me warm. But, but outside of the proper boundaries, it becomes destructive. It destroys rather than lifts up.

So, there’s a lot of the same properties, but it becomes something that ruins rather than restores and creates. And that’s the same thing with marriage, with the sexual union. It is powerful and important, and that is why it has to have boundaries and directionality and purpose.

And we don’t go for those boundaries and that purpose—we don’t go to the culture; we go to the Creator. And He says that marriage is between a male and a female, that it has to be free, it’s faithful for as long as they both shall live, and it needs to be fruitful. These are the qualities of marriage and the marital act.”
